Most of her steps I've heard before in other parenting books and it's good to have them reenforced again.

A helpful guide. May 03, JaNel rated it really liked it Shelves: parenting. This is one of the better parenting books I've read. It has many specific ideas on how to be happy in general and how to apply it to parenting. I've noticed this so many times. The kids pick up on tension, but aren't clear on the explanantion.

Our idea of this is an industrial idea. May I be well. May I be happy. May I be filled with ease. May all beings everywhere be ". Not authoritarian. Apr 25, Sarah Eiseman rated it it was amazing. I definitely had some preconceived notions about someone who is divorced giving advice on how to raise happy kids. But this notion was definitely misplaced the further into the book I got. This book was not like that. Although some of the concepts may be tough to implement, you can see that the strategies she mentions are good for all people, not just children. These are habits of successful people in life. They have solid emotional intelligence, deal with stress in constructive ways, and manage their priorities in a way that let you know where you stand.

I found this book to be a refreshing book—fiction or non-fiction. As I mentioned, some of the concepts are tough to implement all at once, but they are also realistic and the results would be long-lasting and pervasive.

It is recently published and it's packed with the latest research studies and findings mostly post related to raising happy children in today's challenging and consumer-based world!

The studies presented help parents apply the techniques in a simple day-to-day manner. The author suggests very practical and easy parenting methods to apply in every day life. I have already put into practice so many things tha I am so happy that I have bought this book and read it in less than a week. I have already put into practice so many things that she has suggested, and I have already seen obvious changes with my 6-year old son who was rather more inclined to being worried and anxious, but now is manifesting a more playful and optimistic outlook.

Reading the book, I can easily distinguish between what really matters and what doesn't and therefore evaluating my daily parental practices. What I loved about the author is that she is very self-aware and humble, so she doesn't propose that she is above other parents because of her background in psychology. On the contrary, she uses constructive criticism to analyze her own parenting skills and offer solutions to whatever mistakes she has done in the past; I felt that she admits that she is not a perfect mother, but she is a great mother who is trying hard to raise happy and healthy children.

This gives the book so much validity and weight!!

I can see myself reading it again in the future and the organization, chapters and subtitle headings of the book are logical and indexed, making it easy to locate a specific topic. I highly recommend reading this with your spouse if you want some simple ways to improve your parenting practices and help rig your children's environment toward happiness. I have two girls, and one is far happier than the other, despite my efforts to do MORE of the things Carter suggests with the less happy of the two. I realize this is anecdotal and there is no control for how Melancholy Daughter would be if I didn't make those efforts, but it is discouraging nonetheless. Really loved this book. Picked it up randomly from a book store because I loved the title of the book, and for me that is what parenting is about- Raising happiness. I like that this book is not preachy and the author gives several instances where she herself goofed up!
